Preliminary Announcement: 2026 NASAT, June 27-28 at Richmond’s VCU

June 30, 2025 by Fred Morlan

IQBT is pleased to tentatively announce that we will be holding the 15th National All-Star Academic Tournament at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia on the weekend of June 27 & 28.

Congratulations Illinois Blue on Winning the 2025 NASAT!

June 30, 2025 by Fred Morlan

Congratulations on Illinois Blue on their win in the 2025 National All-Star Academic Tournament! They overcame 16 other teams to win this year’s tournaments. With a record of 14-2, they had a one game lead over Maryland Black. This forced a best of three final between the two teams for the championship, with Illinois holding a one game advantage. Illinois Blue won the first game of that final, 365-220, to win the title. Maryland Black finished second.

The District of Columbia and Missouri A teams finished tied for third with 12-4 records. They played a one-game tiebreaker, which Missouri A won, 320-225, to take third.

The tournament’s all-stars, as determined by their points per game in the preliminary round robin, were:

Evan Ting, Indiana, 52.19 PPG
Spencer Manning, Illinois Blue, 51.25 PPG
Janani Gollapalli, Virginia A, 47.81 PPG
Camden Williams, Missouri A, 42.50 PPG
Milo Scanlon, Pennsylvania Gold, 41.56 PPG
David Noles, Kentucky B, 40.31 PPG
Soham Ray, Missouri B, 40.31 PPG
Sophia Jones, Maryland Black, 38.44 PPG
Karthik Jayaram, Georgia, 37.81 PPG
Ben Hellman, District of Columbia, 37.19 PPG

Congratulations to everyone on a great tournament, and thank you for playing! I look forward to the 2026 NASAT.

Open Online Fundraiser for New American Pathways – April 27

April 14, 2025 by Fred Morlan

Update for 4/26: For those participating in tomorrow’s tournament, you should have received an informational email from me earlier today. If you haven’t received it, email me at fred@iqbtnasat.com.

IQBT is holding an online quiz bowl tournament as a fundraiser for New American Pathways on Sunday, April 27 using IQBT Regular Season Set #4. This set is at “normal” high school difficulty, so it’d be a great introduction to any players new to quiz bowl. This is an open tournament – anyone can participate regardless of education level.

Quiz bowl is a team-based academic competition game where teams of up to four compete to answer questions in various academic subjects, including history, science, literature, fine arts, world religions, mythology, philosophy, current events, pop culture, geography, and beyond. You can watch this YouTube video to see how a game of quiz bowl works.

The tournament will start at 10 a.m. Eastern. Teams will play approximately 7-9 rounds, depending on scheduling and the number of teams signed up.

New American Pathways is an Atlanta-based 501(c)(3) charity that helps refugees adjust to moving to the United States. You can read more about their mission here.

This charity is supported annually by the Charity Bowl, organized by the hosts of the Shutdown Fullcast podcast, the internet’s only college football podcast. People donate to money under the name of their college, or their rival college, or Protect Trans Kids University. The Charity Bowl raised over a million dollars for NAP last year.

To play, please make a donation to New American Pathways of at least $20.

Note that there is a specific Charity Bowl donation link that is live on April 14 and goes through April 18. Donations at other times are welcome, but they won’t count towards the bragging rights of the Charity Bowl.

Players will need a webcam, a microphone, and a Zoom account.

All inquiries regarding this tournament can be directed to me at fred@iqbtnasat.com.

If you would be interested in volunteering as a moderator for this event, please email me.

To sign up to play as part of a team or as a free agent, please do so here.

2024 IQBT Undergraduate Championship Qualification Event

September 20, 2024 by Fred Morlan

International Quiz Bowl Tournaments, LLC will be hosting a qualifying event for the 2025 IQBT Undergraduate Championship on Wednesday, October 30 through Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

This event will consist of 70 bonuses played by each team. The difficulty of this set will be two dots per the College Quiz Bowl Calendar Difficulty Scale. The difficulty of the Undergraduate Championship proper is three dots.

The entry fee will be $60 per team. Teams can be made up of up to four players, all of whom must be undergraduate students as defined below. Schools can register multiple teams.

Staffers will be paid $20 per qualification session read.

Editors will be announced in the near future.

Information about eligibility

Teams may only be made up of teams that qualify as undergraduate students, per the following information.

A competition year is defined as beginning August 1 of a year and concludes on the subsequent July 31.

A postsecondary degree is an associate’s, bachelor’s, doctorate, or master’s degree.

An accredited school is one that offers classes towards earning a postsecondary degree.

A class is a course taken for credit at an accredited school. Classes include practical experiences such as internships or work placement programs. Classes may be taken online.

An undergraduate student is defined as:
• Having graduated from high school or have completed a GED.
• Having not graduated with a postsecondary degree (excluding associate’s degrees taking fewer than four years to earn) before the competition year.
• Having completed no more than ten semesters of post-high school education.
• Taking two classes over the competition year

To compete in the fall semester, an undergraduate student must be taking two “normal” classes worth of credit at the time, where, for a traditional, two semester per academic year college, each class would be worth 3.0 credit hours.

To compete in the spring semester, an undergraduate student must be taking or have taken a total of two “normal” classes worth of credit over the academic year, where, for a traditional, two semester per academic year college, each class would be worth 3.0 credit hours. Students who fulfill this requirement and graduated after the fall semester are eligible in the spring semester.

Students enrolled in a co-op or other experiential course but are under the necessary number of credit hours to be eligible and that meet all the other eligibility requirements may request an exemption to be granted eligibility by email Fred Morlan at fred@iqbtnasat.com.

Question Distribution

The question distribution of subjects is as follows:

Registration

This event has a soft registration deadline of October 21, 2024. Teams that have registered by this date will be presented with a list of time slots that are available to play in, from which each team will select their five preferred slots in order. Teams will then be randomly drawn and given a time slot per their preferred selections and what are available. If a team’s preferred time slots are not available, they will not be assigned a time slot but will be able notified via email of the remaining time slots and what their options are. These selections are on a first come, first serve basis.

Teams can register after October 21, 2024, but they will not have priority in selecting their time slot for registration. They will be able to pick from the remaining time slots as they are available.

To register for this event, please fill out https://forms.gle/GH49riavkaZsigsA7

Teams that have additional questions may contact Fred Morlan at fred@iqbtnasat.com.
